BASEBALL BATS INFORMATION

BASEBALL BATS INFORMATION
Where can I go to find information on how to coach a boys’ baseball team? (ages 6-8)?

My son’s baseball team this year is going to have it rough. First of all, we started out without a coach. Now that they found someone, I don’t think we are in any better shape. He can barely speak english, so it is very hard to understand him, and he is extremely soft spoken, and I don’t think he has any idea how to coach. I know enough about the game to help out, but I would like to learn more so that I can really help this poor guy get this team together. He has asked for any help that anyone is willing to give. Where can I find a good resource that will explain how to coach this age group, and what strategies work best? (At practice, we have 12 kids just standing around kicking dirt while one kid bats…any suggestions on what works would be great!)

Well, I’ve never used the internet to find a practice schedule, but someone else on yahoo answers suggested http://www.webball.com/cms/page1143.cfm and it seemed like a decent site, although possibly a little complicated.

Generally the practices I’ve had go something like warm-up/stretch, play catch, practice fielding ground balls (sometimes just put kids at every position and hit balls to them in order), and finally batting practice (what ends up being 12 kids kicking dirt at that age, unfortunately). There are plenty of other drills that are done, but they might be a bit much for that age.

Set times on how long you want to do everything and time it so you stay on schedule. Sometimes little league coaches in batting practice keep giving a kid swings at a ‘last ball’ hoping they don’t have to end on 25 whiffs, but if you do that it can just waste everyone’s time so I wouldn’t.

Hope thatt might have helped in some way…
